CHALICE, ENAMEL

This item belongs to the Artistic Silver Maestro Collection from Molina, which represents the summit of the silversmith’s art. The sacred vessels in this collection are hand crafted using the age-old techniques of the silversmith’s art that have flourished in Spain since the Middle Ages. Some of the articles are faithful replicas of historic vessels, while others are products of the artists’ extensive historical knowledge and creative imagination.

The Tassilo Chalice and Paten is an Eighth-Century Chalice commissioned by Duke Tassilo of Bavaria to commemorate his marriage to Princess Liutpirc from Lombardy. The original inscription with the names of the Duke and his bride has been changed to Per ipsum, cum ipso, in ipso – Through Him, with Him, in Him from the Roman Canon. The original Chalice has hand engraved figures of Christ the Pantocrator and the Four Evangelists on the cup and the Blessed Mother, St. John the Baptist, St. Paul, and St. Theodore. This version is true to the original design, except that the design is realized in 925 Sterling Silver with kiln fired cloisonné enamel and a gold lined cup.

The Chalice is 8 inches high with a 4-1/2-inch diameter cup that holds 20 ounces. The Paten is 6-1/2 inches in diameter. Like the Chalice, it is realized in 925 Sterling Silver with kiln fired cloisonné enamel.
